So.. if you guys haven’t noticed, I am a little of a stationery freak.. I love cute stickers, washi tape, little notes, gel pens, glitter pens, ink.. let’s just say when I go to a stationery shop I just want everything. But, I don’t really use all these things, they end up in a drawer usually.. scrapbooking is too expensive, smashbooking confuses me, journalling take too long, but recently I come across something that is both functional and fun- Filofaxing!
Now if you are a person who uses an app or PDA or digital diary or email to keep your life together, you can stop reading because it’s downhill and confusion from here. But if you are a person who loves all these little stationery things like I do, and always have scraps of paper lying around and can never seem to find them.. let me tell you all about these super cute ring bound planners!
There are of course many different kinds of ring bound agendas, but the brand I use is Filofax. They are a UK brand and has been around since the 80s. I know, it’s those things our parents used to have for work… seriously they’re so popular now, there’s almost a cult around them. My mom was flabbergasted. There are different sizes, but the popular ones are Personal and Pocket. I like the Personal because it’s big enough to jot down plenty of stuff yet small enough to fit in a standard purse. Pictured here is my Jack Vintage Filofax. I like it for the design and it is one of the cheaper ones, but if you buy one of the more expensive ones, it has slots and tabs and penholders on the cover. I highly recommend those ones, because then if you have to, you can put credit cards and things in them and these can double as a wallet.
The idea is that with the rings, you can add, remove or rearrange pages and refills as you like. This means it is very customizable to be any kind of organizer you want. A Filofax usually comes with a month, week and day planner as well as some blank sheets and to do lists. But you can always get refills. Using plastic tabs, you can even mark the sections in your organizer.. for now I have a few sections: Addresses, Information for house stuff, Restaurant and reviews, and a Food Diary. You can find refills for: City maps, Calendars, Zip pockets, Calculators, Rules, or use Philofaxy’s templates for even more sections like: Book Review, Vet Visit Notes, Prescriptions, Meal Planner, Recipes, Birthdays. Perfect if you love jotting things down and having them all in one place!
Here is one of my week pages, as you can see I’ve really let loose my stickers and inner kawaii on these. I like being able to look through my week in one go. I mainly use my Filofax as a day to day record and planner, so nothing too special there. Some people get reaaaally creative with these, and their pages are beautiful. I think of it as a practical and utilitarian way of scrapbooking or journalling. Also it’s an excellent excuse to use cute stickers.
Here is a transparent heart divider and the start to my Food Diary section. Yep, I really am putting all my stickers to good use.. it’s like channeling my inner 8 year old again, except this time I have a credit card…
The front page is called the Dashboard, and again some people get really creative with it. Since it is the first page you see, it is an ideal place for daily notes, reminders or whatever else. Some people put grocery lists, inspirational quotes, photos of loved ones.. for me I only have my business card (in case anyone finds it and needs information to return it) and a small grocery list. My Filofax is still in its infancy and needs to mature with time…
When it comes to decoration, there are sooo many cute stickers that are specifically meant for agenda users. There are tiny emoticon-like stickers to suit every daily mood, dividers, highlighters, even event stickers for Birthdays, Weekends, etc. Since they are so cheap (you can usually get a sheet for about $1 each), it’s possible you will end up with more than you want. Hence the super decorated pages.
Here is another look at a typical emoticon sticker, or deco sticker. There are about a zillion on one page, enough to last for ages.
I kind of got so carried away with these tiny stickers that I have no idea how I ended up with even a sticker book. I guess a set came with these.. well it fits most of the deco stickers and all I have to do is flip the pages to find the sheet I want. My personal organizer has its own personal sticker organizer.. what in the world..
These stickers are mostly Korean made I think, and very high quality. They’re not your usual horrible paper stickers, instead they are a very thin plastic which do not bulk up your organizer. Some are matte so you can write on them, but most are transparent so you can use them as highlighters too and will not obstruct your writing.
It’s easy to get carried away with accessories for your agenda. Here are some little post its that you can stick in for special notes. They are long enough to also act as bookmarks or tabs.
And here is another must-have accessory, washi tape! They are a perfect addition to the decorating. Do you think I have a problem yet? Now that I write this blog, I think I do… but hey, 10 years from now when I look back at my diary from this year.. I will think.. “boy she’s like an 8 year old with a credit card.”…
Expect to see more personal organizer related posts here on Openinkstand! I guess this is now a Calligraphy and Stationery blog…
