So sometimes, despite our best efforts, a nib gets stuck in the flange. Maybe it’s just a big nib, or some ink or rust got crusted in the flange or whatever, but it just won’t budge.
I had that problem recently with this Nikko G. I was a little traumatized by this previous experience and tried not to struggle too much with it in case it breaks the wood and stabs me in the eye. Well.. there is a foolproof method to remove stubborn stuck nibs.
Just grab a pair of needlenose pliers and place it like this, one joint at the top and at the bottom of the nib.
Aaaaand squeeze. The nib will pop out, no matter how stubbornly stuck. You can see the rust and gunk at the bottom of the nib.
If it is still stuck, then you can try pulling out with the pliers. If you want to keep the nib, make sure not to squeeze the tines, just the side. With a little rocking action, and carefully keep the flange secure with your other hand, it will slip right out.
Easy peasy. No wood breaking, flange falling out, nib in eye nonsense. Just clean out the nib and flange with a needle and it should be good to go again.
