Changing a nib every 1-2 days?

Advice on nibs from the Penmen’s Art Journal 1878-ish. I don’t know the quality of nibs back then, but to change a nib every 1-2 days? Either these guys are writing a crap load or the nibs back then were very badly made! I have a feeling it is the former..
